Skilled Independent Category
This is an independent permanent resident visa. Migrants are selected based on their occupation, age, skills, qualifications, English language ability and employability. The relevant visa subclass is the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – points tested stream.
State/Territory Nominated Category
The relevant visa subclass is the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190). Each state and territory determines its criteria for nomination and is allocated a certain number of places each year. Relevant skills in an occupation in demand in a particular state or territory and are nominated by that same jurisdiction.

This category is for skilled migrants who are willing to live and work in a designated regional area of Australia. The two provisional skilled visas in this category are under Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494). Once a candidate fulfills the eligibility criteria under any of these visas, they can apply for Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191), which commenced on November 2022.
Employer-sponsored Category
An applicant who wants to choose the pathway to permanent residency with a sponsorship from an employer needs to apply under this category within the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186). Ideally, candidates require three years of skill in their nominated occupation to qualify for nomination. Also, employers need to be authorized by the government to sponsor employees as well.
